Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has informed that in May of the coming year, he will travel to Moscow for the Victory Day celebrations.
"It is natural that as the Prime Minister of Slovakia I am very interested in participating in the official celebrations of the victory over fascism, which will take place on May 9, 2025 in Moscow. Therefore, I gladly accepted the official invitation of the President of the Russian Federation. Vladimir Putin will take part in these important celebrations, which I will do," Fico wrote on his social media profile.
The legacy of fighting fascism
Fico emphasised that the Slovak government values the legacy of fighting fascism and the historical truth of World War II. "The Slovak government values the legacy of the fight against fascism, the historical truth about World War II and the role played by the Red Army in it. That is why the Slovak government will organize a number of events in 2025, the most important of which will be the celebration of the victory over fascism in May," added the Prime Minister.
Reuters reminds us that Fico's government halted deliveries of military equipment to Kyiv, while allowing commercial sales to continue. The Prime Minister argued that supplying weapons prolongs the war in Ukraine. Fico's stance on the war is similar to that of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who met with Vladimir Putin in July. Both prime ministers hold views that differ from the official position of the European Union, which aims to isolate Moscow.
