Pomelo: The unsung citrus hero of the cold seasons

Autumn and winter mark the return of popularity for citrus fruits. Many revel in the taste of mandarins, and the scent of oranges becomes a hallmark of these seasons. While shopping, it's worthwhile to explore another fruit brimming with vitamins and nutrients.

The pomelo, often referred to as the giant orange, resembles a grapefruit more closely than an orange. As the largest citrus fruit in the world, it can reach up to 10 inches in diameter and weigh approximately 4 pounds. Its thick, spongy rind is usually yellowish or pink. Beneath this lies juicy flesh, divided into segments, offering a sweet taste akin to oranges with a hint of grapefruit bitterness.

Pomelo is a true vitamin C powerhouse, which boosts the immune system and shields cells from the effects of free radicals. One fruit can contain up to 412% of the recommended daily intake of this vitamin, making it a natural ally for our immunity. It's particularly beneficial during autumn and winter, when the likelihood of catching a cold increases. Pomelo is also abundant in other vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, as well as magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

Pomelo supports heart health through antioxidants such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid. These compounds help reduce triglyceride levels and "bad" LDL cholesterol, thus lowering the risk of heart disease. Antioxidants also combat free radicals, which can delay the body's ageing process. Additionally, the fibre in pomelo supports healthy bowel function, further improving overall well-being. In 100 grams of pomelo flesh, you'll find only 40 kcal, making it an ideal choice for those mindful of their weight.

How to eat pomelo?

When selecting the perfect pomelo, consider a few factors. The skin should be firm and free from brown spots, which indicate spoilage. Avoid fruits that are too soft, as they might be overripe. The best pomelos are large and heavy, indicating their juiciness. Also, take a moment to appreciate the aroma - ripe pomelos have a strong scent with a subtle hint of bitterness.

Simply peel the fruit and remove the membranes before savouring the sweet-bitter flavour of the juicy segments. Pomelo works wonderfully as an addition to salads (not just fruit ones), as an ingredient in cocktails, or as an addition to Asian cuisine dishes. You can also mix chopped fruit into yoghurt, porridge, or an ice cream dessert.
