Jujube: The superfruit reviving senior health and well-being

One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is an ageing society. Thanks to medicine and increased awareness about diet for seniors, the quality of life for people over 70 is steadily improving. However, declining immunity, the body's regenerative abilities, and memory issues remain significant problems. A key change is in everyday eating habits. The jujube fruit—known in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries—can help improve these issues.

In the UK, the less common jujube is increasingly sought after by older individuals or those caring for their senior relatives. Although fresh fruits are not readily available, dried ones can be found in many larger supermarkets and online stores. The powdered version appears as an ingredient in dietary supplements and cosmetics.

A fruit known in Chinese tradition for years

Common jujube, also known as jujuba or Chinese date, was used in China as early as the 3rd century BC as a ritual fruit. It was made into wine, jams, pickles, and marinades. To this day, jujube paste is used as a filling for zongzi, Chinese dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. This dish is traditionally prepared for the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month according to the Chinese calendar—this year, it is on the final day of May.

In China, the red fruits, in their fresh version resembling apples, are also used to prepare traditional rice porridge at the end of the lunar year. They are attributed with properties that protect and strengthen weaker individuals.

Oatmeal with jujube for memory and concentration

Dried jujube fruits are a great addition to breakfasts, such as warming oatmeal or millet groats. Chopped fruits mixed with warm ingredients are easier for older people to eat. Although the valuable properties of jujubes can be beneficial for everyone, they are especially recommended for seniors. According to the website polsatnews.pl: 

"(...) in one of the experiments published in the journal Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, scientists demonstrated that jujube extract improves cognitive abilities in laboratory animals." 

A similar effect can be expected in humans. According to scientists, jujube exhibits neuroprotective properties, meaning it protects nerve cells from damage. Moreover, it may also contribute to the creation of new cells and the formation of new connections between neurons. Memory improvement in older adults is also indirectly due to the calming properties of the fruits. Stress reduction leads to better sleep during which memory consolidation occurs.

Other properties of Chinese dates

Jujube fruits support and strengthen the body's immunity thanks to the high vitamin C content. Jujube also ensures a supply of vitamins A, K, and B group vitamins. It is rich in potassium, magnesium, iron, and antioxidants that fight free radicals and protect cells from damage. It is a good source of fibre and natural sugars, which provide energy without causing a sudden spike in blood glucose.

Jujube infusion for a good night's sleep

Starting the day with jujube oatmeal is a good idea, and in the evening, it's beneficial to drink an infusion that relieves stomach problems and helps with sleep. Both fresh and dried fruits work well for preparing the injection. Just pour boiling water over them and leave for 10 to 20 minutes. For dried jujube, the brewing time is slightly longer. You can add honey or maple syrup to the infusion.
