Biden's cautious support for Ukraine: Independence over victory
The outgoing US President, Joe Biden, did not anticipate Ukraine winning the war against Russia. However, he aimed for Ukraine to defend itself sufficiently to maintain its independence, and this has been achieved, according to President's advisor Eric Green in an interview with "TIME" magazine.
The outgoing US President, Joe Biden, did not foresee Ukraine's victorious victory over Russia. His goal was for Ukraine to be able to defend itself and preserve its independence. "This was never meant to be a story with a happy ending," President's advisor Eric Green stated in an interview with TIME.
Biden's goals for Ukraine
Green explained that the Biden administration did not focus on territorial issues, recognising that Ukraine was unlikely to reclaim the territories occupied by Russia in 2014. Biden sought to unite NATO allies and prevent confrontation with Russia. Although these aims were achieved, the overall outcome was not entirely satisfactory.
Despite US support, dissatisfaction in Ukraine was growing. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for change under the future US president. Since February 2022, Ukraine has received 183 billion dollars in aid, yet not all of Zelensky's requests were met.
Zelensky's victory plan
During his visit to the US, Zelensky presented a "victory plan", which included demands for increased supplies of military equipment. In November, the US authorised Ukraine to use American missiles for attacks deep within Russian territory. In January, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on Russian energy entities.
