Wiola's winter warmer: Quick cheese and chive toasties

On a chilly December morning, we naturally crave warming and satisfying meals. We use a lot of energy to warm up our bodies, so both in the morning and after returning home, it's worth replenishing our energy with the right amount of calories. On Wiola's Culinary profile, I discovered a delightful idea for fried bread slices with cheese and chives. They're perfect for breakfast and dinner.

Cheese and ham toasties, eggy bread, or French toast—you can now add another tried-and-true idea for a warm meal. Wiola's coated bread is a recipe that stands alone. Mix everything you need for a wholesome meal in one bowl with a fresh twist.

What to fry Wiola's coated bread on?

You can use rapeseed oil or clarified butter to fry the slices in the egg mixture. Both types of fat have a sufficiently high smoke point, so you don't have to worry about harmful substances that result from burning fats. If you're concerned about cholesterol, rapeseed oil is a better choice as it contains much less saturated fat.

Add cream or yoghurt to the mixture?

If you're watching your weight, yoghurt is a better choice. It contains less fat than cream and is rich in probiotic bacteria, which improve intestinal function and support the body's resistance to infections. On the other hand, cream makes the mixture creamier in taste. Furthermore, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and some minerals are dissolved in fats, making them more easily absorbed by the body.

Recipe for bread in egg mixture with cheese and chives

What makes Wiola's bread unique is the addition of a few unusual ingredients to the mixture. In the bowl for dipping slices, there are eggs, sour cream, yellow cheese, and chives.

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs,
  • a heaping tablespoon of sour cream or Greek yoghurt,
  • 2 tablespoons of flour,
  • 4 tablespoons of grated yellow cheese,
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped chives,
  • a pinch of salt and pepper,
  • 5 slices of bread,
  • oil for frying.

Preparation:

  1. Crack 2 large eggs into a bowl and add a heaping tablespoon of 12% or 18% cream. Mix using a whisk.
  2. Add flour, grated yellow cheese, cheddar, chopped chives, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients again.
  3. Heat the pan with 2 tablespoons of rapeseed oil.
  4. Slice the bread and dip the slices in the egg mixture, covering their surface completely.
  5. Fry to a golden colour on both sides.
