Embracing aromatherapy: Natural scents for a fragrant home
Smell plays a crucial role in our lives, influencing our well-being. To avoid unpleasant odours at home, we often turn to candles, incense, or air fresheners that fill the space with a pleasant aroma. The issue, however, is that these are frequently based on artificial ingredients.

Aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine, is based on the assumption that scents can improve our health and well-being. Its roots go back to ancient times. Scientists have taken notice and discovered that aromatherapy holds significant therapeutic potential.
In this method, natural scents are used, mainly as essential oils and distillates. Each scent can affect us differently—some energise, while others relax. It's worthwhile to explore aromatherapy and start using it at home. The simplest way is to create a homemade air freshener to bring a natural, beautiful fragrance to your home. We explain how to prepare it.
How to prepare a homemade air freshener?
Essential oils are obtained from fresh or dried parts of plants. That's why their scents are natural and pleasant. They cost about £2 per bottle, though the price depends on the plant they are derived from. The cheaper options include lavender oils, while the most expensive is made from Damask rose petals—5 ml of this oil costs as much as £360.
Dreaming of a natural, beautiful scent at home? Choose a high-quality essential oil or make your homemade air freshener, which is quite economical. You only need two items: lemon peels and a sandwich bag. Grate the peels on a fine grater and put them in the bag. The more peels you add, the more intense the scent will be. Seal the bag and place it on a radiator. Your room will be filled with a delightful citrus aroma within a few minutes.
Eco-friendly odour neutraliser
The bathroom often has an unpleasant smell. The source is bacteria accumulating on tiles, towels, or fixtures. How can you get rid of it? After cleaning, it's worth using a homemade odour neutraliser.
To make it, you'll need a spray bottle, two tablespoons of water, three tablespoons of fabric conditioner, and one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda. Place all the ingredients in the bottle and mix them. You can use this spray immediately. Bicarbonate of soda effectively absorbs unpleasant odours, and the fabric conditioner will add a pleasant fragrance to the room.
