According to Radio Svoboda, between 10:30 PM and 12:30 AM on Monday, soldiers stationed at the 57th Air Base named after Mihail Kogălniceanu observed an unmanned flying system near the Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, followed by two others.
"Most likely of commercial type"
The drones, small in size and "most likely of commercial type," were noted for their low-speed movement at a low altitude. Following safety protocols, the situation was reported to the civil aviation authorities.
"Electronic warfare measures were also repeatedly applied, and radio and visual contact with the last two systems were lost around 12:30", said the Romanian Air Force press service.
Investigation underway
The military prosecutor's office has been notified about the incident, and an internal investigation is currently being conducted at the base. The 57th Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, which houses Romanian and allied fighters participating in an Air Policing mission in the Black Sea region, is undergoing investigation.
Recent reports state that the base near Constanța is set for modernization and expansion.
Euronews Romania reported in March that the government has earmarked €2.5 billion for this project, aiming to transform the base in Constanța county into the largest NATO facility in Europe.
