Chinese cargo ship seized for Taiwan telecom sabotage
The Taiwanese coast guard caught the crew of the Chinese cargo ship "Hong Tai" attempting to damage an undersea telecommunications cable running between Taiwan and China.
The Taiwan Coast Guard reported that early Tuesday morning, Chunghwa Telecom notified them of damage to a telecommunications cable connecting Taiwan's main island with Penghu Island, which is located in the Taiwan Strait.
A cargo ship was identified near the site of the incident, intercepted, and then escorted to Anping port.
Although the ship was flying the flag of Togo, the entire eight-member crew consisted of Chinese citizens. The owner of the ship remains unknown, and the registration data indicates at least three different names associated with the vessel's identification number.
