Trump pushes for peace: Sanctions and arms for Ukrainian stability

Peter Doran, an expert from the Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, believes that President Trump is striving for lasting peace in Ukraine. A key element of this process will be increasing economic pressure on Russia.

Doran points out that Russia's economy is weakened, making it susceptible to further sanctions. He proposes imposing these on financial institutions supporting Russian trade and increasing arms supplies to Ukraine. This strategy is intended to force Putin to opt for peace.

The expert discusses the conditions for lasting peace for Ukraine. "Pressure on Russia is needed"

There is no agreement on the table, not even a preliminary one. The peace process is still in the exploratory phase. President Trump is attempting to discern what both sides are willing to compromise on and what they refuse to concede, as well as how to ensure that Russia will not attack Ukraine again in the coming years - emphasised Doran.

Doran recalled that in 2014, European peace talks were held in Minsk. European leaders failed to reverse Russia's actions, and, as it became apparent in 2022, also failed to prevent them.

According to Doran, President Trump has no intention of abandoning Europe but is focused on establishing peace in Ukraine. This process remains in the exploratory phase.

The assessment, according to the expert, is being conducted by Putin as well. - Putin is testing President Trump to gauge what he can gain from him. However, if he experiences firsthand the consequences of evasions and attempts to manipulate the peace process, there is a chance for positive negotiation outcomes - says Peter Doran in an interview with PAP.

Doran emphasises that forming a coalition of countries ready to support Ukraine is crucial. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Sweden have already declared their willingness to send troops. Such a coalition aims to prevent violations of peace agreements.
