US refrains from supporting UN resolution on Russia-Ukraine conflict

The US does not wish to join the UN resolution project on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing three diplomatic sources. The document expressed support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemned the Russian invasion.

"The US decision reflects the growing rift between the presidents of Ukraine and the US, Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, who seeks a quick end to the war in Ukraine and whose team is conducting talks with Russia without Kyiv's involvement," Reuters notes.

The draft resolution obtained by the agency condemns Russian aggression and reaffirms the commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognised borders."

In previous years, the US has been a co-initiator of such resolutions as a sign of support for a just peace in Ukraine - one source told Reuters.

According to another source, more than 50 countries are co-initiators of this resolution. The situation is currently such that (the US) will not sign it - another source conveyed. Reuters emphasised that Washington can still change its decision on this matter.

The spokesperson for the US diplomatic mission at the United Nations in Geneva has not yet responded to the agency's request for comment on this matter.
