Iran's alliance at risk: Fears grow over Russia-US deal
The Iranian newspaper Jomhouri-e Eslami has issued a warning that Russia might abandon Iran in favour of a deal with the USA concerning Ukraine.
The newspaper highlights that Russia did not support Iranian forces in Syria and has collaborated with the USA and Israel against Bashar al-Assad. Jomhouri-e Eslami cautions that Moscow could betray Iran again if Washington comes to its aid in Ukraine. The newspaper urges Iranian authorities to remain vigilant and to develop a strategy in the event of a US-Russia agreement.
"Iran will be drawn into this equation alongside Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine… and Russia will turn a blind eye to any actions the United States may take against Iran," claims "Jomhouri-e Eslami" in an article widely commented upon by other national media, titled "Us and the Great Moscow-Washington Deal."
Similar concerns are raised by the newspaper Shargh, which questions whether Tehran will be sacrificed in a deal between Putin and Trump. Shargh suggests that Iran should contemplate direct negotiations with the USA regarding its nuclear programme.
Iran in the face of international tensions
The Iran International portal reports that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov is attempting to reassure Iran, asserting that US-Russian discussions will not impact Moscow's relations with Tehran. Nevertheless, there is trepidation within Iran that Russia and China might not offer sufficient support in light of the sanctions imposed by the USA in 2018.
