US President Donald Trump recently directed exceptionally harsh words at Volodymyr Zelenskyy, causing concern worldwide. Trump called Zelenskyy a "dictator" and blamed him for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to Trump, Zelenskyy convinced the USA to invest considerable sums in a war that "never had to start" - recalls the portal of the magazine "Der Spiegel".

German media on the US policy shift

Spiegel emphasises that Trump's statements resemble Kremlin propaganda and may jeopardise future US aid to Ukraine. "Trump's tirade is an expression of contempt for Zelenskyy and coldness towards Ukrainians," the portal notes. Trump seems willing to abandon Ukraine in favour of Vladimir Putin, marking a departure from previous US policy.

"The most powerful ally turns into an opponent; for Ukrainians, this could end in disaster. Trump makes it clear to other Europeans that America is not their friend". For example, when he cynically notes that "this war is much more important to Europe than it is to us because we are separated from it by a great, beautiful ocean," remarked the German portal.

The tagesschau service adds that by calling Zelenskyy a dictator, Trump blames Ukraine for Russian aggression. "Such a person does not want peace; they want capitulation," it reads. Trump has repeatedly promised a quick end to the war in Ukraine, even at the cost of the country's territory.

Russia pleased with the situation

Tagesschau notes that Russia is likely pleased with this shift in US policy. Trump does not have to fear opposition among Republicans, highlighted by the silence of the US Congress. "Russia has returned to the world stage at the invitation of the USA," concludes the German service.

German media warn that a change in the US position could be catastrophic for Ukraine, which is losing its most powerful ally. "America is no longer a friend of Europe," notes "Spiegel". Trump's statements could impact future international relations and the region's stability.
