Maddy Cusack was a treasured member of Sheffield United's women's team and held the title of team captain. She was the first female footballer to play over 100 matches for the club, thereby setting a record for the most number of appearances by a woman. Her sudden death sent shockwaves around the club.

The tragic event came to light on 20 September 2023, and since then, an investigation to determine the cause of her death has been underway. In December, Sheffield United was initially cleared from involvement in the case, but a recent development has shifted the course of the investigation.

Immediate coach dismissal

On Friday, a surprising announcement was made that Jonathan Morgan, the coach of Sheffield United's first women's team, was immediately dismissed from the club. The official statement indicated that the decision was taken in light of new information concerning Maddy Cusack's death.

"In the past 24 hours, we have come across new information about Jonathan Morgan and his relationship with the players under his care. We will no longer affiliate with him in any capacity, and our working relationship has ended with immediate effect." - as stated in the official statement.

New information from the footballer's family?

The British media are scrutinizing this unfolding situation. "The Sun" reports a significant turn in the case when the family, after a recent meeting with the English Football Association, disclosed new evidence. Consequently, the FA has initiated an investigation into Sheffield United.

Local media have not quoted Jonathan Morgan's direct statements, but his stance is described as such: He maintains his innocence, having nothing to do with Maddy's death, and denies treating her differently than his other players.
