Recipe for camembert in puff pastry

Baked camembert in puff pastry is an excellent idea for a fast, tasty dish that will impress everyone. Just three ingredients, and the final result is truly remarkable. Try this recipe and discover for yourself that simple solutions are often the most effective.

Ingredients:

  • 1 camembert cheese,
  • 1 package of puff pastry,
  • 1 egg for brushing.

Baked camembert in puff pastry is perfect for any occasion – it requires minimal effort, and the end result is delightful. When baked, the camembert becomes liquid and creamy, providing a contrast to the crispy, golden layer of puff pastry. This combination of flavours makes the dish not only tasty but also impressive. You can serve it alone or with accompaniments that will enhance the flavour — such as honey, cranberry sauce, or nuts.

Preparation:

  1. Roll out the puff pastry and place the camembert in the centre.
  2. Wrap the cheese in the pastry, sealing the edges well so they don't come apart during baking.
  3. Brush the entire surface with a beaten egg to give the pastry a golden colour after baking.
  4. Bake in an oven preheated to 200°C (390°F) for about 20 minutes until the pastry is crispy and golden. Serve immediately so the cheese inside is gooey and warm.

Additional tips:

  • To enrich the snack's flavour, you can add your favourite extras, such as a spoonful of cranberry sauce or fig preserves.
  • If you want to add a bit of spice, sprinkle some freshly ground pepper over the camembert before wrapping.
  • Serve with pieces of baguette or crackers so you can scoop up the melted cheese.

What is camembert and how is it made?

Camembert is a soft, ripened cheese from Normandy, France. It is known for its characteristic creamy texture and delicate white rind formed by Penicillium candidum mould. The cheese has a slightly nutty flavour that becomes more intense as it ages.

The production of camembert starts with cow's milk, which is gently heated and acidified with special lactic bacteria. Rennet is then added to coagulate the milk. The curd is gently cut to separate the whey and then placed into moulds, slowly draining excess liquid. When the cheese reaches the proper consistency, it is sprinkled with mould cultures and salt and then left to ripen for about 2-3 weeks.
