Canada considers harsh tariffs on Tesla amid us trade tension

Although American tariffs are currently uncertain, they have prompted Canadian politicians to speak out and openly discuss a potential trade war. Their focus is on products from Elon Musk.

Doug Ford, Ontario's Secretary of State, strongly criticized the Starlink contract, describing it as an infrastructure project for internet access that he intended to discard. The £81 million agreement was designed to provide connectivity to rural areas in the province. Ford blamed President Trump entirely and suggested that Musk have a serious discussion with his close associate.

Starlink was due to be launched in the summer, but Ford emphasised that the provincial authorities would not support a business that harms their economy. This was declared during an official press conference.

Meanwhile, Chrystia Freeland, an MP, suggested implementing 100% tariffs on Tesla and American alcohol. She also stressed the need for "effective and precise" responses to President Trump's actions. Her party will soon hold elections for a new leader, so more categorical positions can be expected.

President Trump has temporarily suspended the imposition of tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico for a month. The main reason cited was the porous borders through which the dangerous drug fentanyl is entering the United States.
