The gunfire reportedly took place on Wednesday at approximately 5:15 AM. A manhunt is underway for the perpetrators, who, according to police, might be hiding in the metro tunnels. No one was injured, but the incident disrupted public transport operations. Surveillance footage broadcast by local media shows at least two men in balaclavas and armed.

Photos and recordings of the armed perpetrators have appeared on social media. "Attackers with Kalashnikovs are currently roaming Brussels," wrote Paweł Rybicki on platform X.

According to Belgian media, the shooting may have been the result of local drug gang rivalries. The area around Brussels-Midi has long been notorious for crime.

The manhunt continues

The police are searching for "a small group, probably two or three people". A spokeswoman added that the perpetrators might still be armed, and the police do not wish to take unnecessary risks.

The event is not currently being treated as a terrorist attack.
