Winter storm havoc: US death toll rises as thousands lose power
The tragic toll of the winter storm in the USA continues to rise. According to the BBC, at least four people have died due to adverse weather conditions, and hundreds of thousands of residents are without power. Dangerous weather has also led to flight cancellations and the closure of several airports.
As reported by the BBC, two people died in a car accident related to the severe weather, and one person was killed in a storm in Missouri. In Texas, the body of a man who froze to death at a bus stop was discovered. Authorities warn that the number of casualties may increase.
The PowerOutage service reports that more than 265,000 consumers across five US states currently lack power. Virginia is the most affected, with nearly 78,000 people lacking access to electricity. It remains unclear whether all power outages are directly related to the storm.
Flight cancellations and warnings
The snowstorm has caused the cancellation of over 1,800 flights across the United States. Washington Ronald Reagan Airport has been closed due to the weather threats.
The Mount Washington Avalanche Center in New Hampshire warns that the wind, which often reaches extreme speeds in these areas, could be more hazardous than the snow.
