A simple trick with a radiator

Many of us struggle with high heating bills, which necessitates finding effective methods to reduce them. The key to success is reducing heat loss, which can be achieved, among other things, by using a simple trick with cardboard and aluminium foil. It is an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to improve thermal comfort at home.

Unfortunately, in many British homes, especially older buildings, the problem is low energy efficiency. The heat from the radiators quickly escapes through poor building insulation and draughty windows, forcing us to seek heating support solutions.

A simple method for everyone

A solution that is becoming increasingly popular online is creating a special panel from cardboard and aluminium foil and then placing it behind the radiator. TikTok is replete with advice, and one of the more popular ideas can be found on the @the.cosyclub profile. All you need is a piece of cardboard, aluminium foil, and adhesive tape or pins.

To prepare your own heat-reflecting panel, simply cut a rectangle from the cardboard that fits behind the radiator, then wrap it in aluminium foil with the shiny side out. Make sure the foil adheres well and doesn’t wrinkle.

The finished panel is placed behind the radiator to ensure the reflected heat energy returns to the room. It can be attached to the wall with adhesive tape, pins, or special brackets. It mustn't shift during use.

How does the cardboard and aluminium foil panel work?

The mechanism is surprisingly simple—aluminium foil acts as a reflective screen that directs heat back into the room. Additionally, the cardboard creates an insulating layer that limits heat transfer into the walls. It is worth emphasising that the investment in necessary materials is minimal, and the savings can be substantial.

In conclusion, using cardboard and aluminium foil behind the radiator effectively reduces heating bills. Thanks to this method, even in older homes, it is possible to increase thermal efficiency significantly without the need for costly renovations.
