Trump claims peace in Ukraine achievable in weeks
The President of the USA, Donald Trump, stated on Monday in Washington that he could bring an end to the war in Ukraine within the next few weeks. He also noted that Russia would accept European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.
Donald Trump met with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, at the White House on Monday. The primary topic of their discussions was the issue of the war in Ukraine. The US President declared that he could end it "within the next few weeks."
When questioned about the possibility of Ukraine surrendering some of its territory to Russia in a peace deal, Trump responded that it remains to be seen.
He also expressed no objections to deploying European troops to Ukraine, emphasizing that European nations are prepared for such a step. Macron affirmed that they are ready and willing to offer these security assurances.
Macron, who initially proposed this idea, clarified that European soldiers would solely act as a guarantee of a ceasefire and would not be positioned on the front line. - They would not be along the front line. They would not be part of the conflict. They would be there to ensure peace is respected - he emphasised.
Trump on Putin: No problem with it
In Trump's view, Russian leader Vladimir Putin would accept European troops in Ukraine as part of a potential agreement ending the war.
Trump confirmed that Putin would be willing to accept it, according to Reuters. He said he had directly asked Putin about the matter and emphasized that the Russian leader had no objections.
Trump also announced that he might meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week or the next to sign an agreement regarding minerals, which he claims is "very close" to being reached. Regarding the meeting with Putin and the trip to Moscow, the American President stated that it would occur "in due time."
Putin himself expressed that "he sees nothing wrong with European involvement in negotiations on Ukraine." He added that Russia and the USA could agree on reducing defence spending. He considered that this would be a positive step.
The Russian leader also stated that the proposed agreement between the USA and Ukraine on minerals is not Russia's concern.
