Toxic gummies alert: Germany warns against muscimol sweets
Toxic fruit gummies containing the poisonous substance muscimol, found in fly agaric mushrooms, have resurfaced in Germany. The district veterinary officer in Giessen warned on Tuesday evening against consuming products sold under the name "Muscimol Duftgummy". These were confiscated from vending machines in Hesse, though it is suspected they may have reached other locations.
These gummies contain muscimol, a toxin present in fly agaric mushrooms, which can cause serious health effects including dizziness, hallucinations, speech disorders, movement disorders, and seizures.
Children are particularly at risk as they might be drawn to the colourful, fruit-like appearance of the gummies. "We strongly warn against consumption!" alerts the veterinary officer from Giessen.
He also urges that any suspicious products resembling gummy bears should be reported to local authorities.
Locations and further actions
The toxic gummies were sold in vending machines located in central Hesse, as well as potentially other areas. The police, together with the veterinary office, are intensively investigating whether these products have been offered elsewhere.
In October, similar warnings were issued in Rhineland-Palatinate, where consumption of the gummies led to the hospitalisation of one person.
Czech source and suspicious distribution
The sweets originate from the Czech Republic, distributed by an intermediary who allegedly withdrew the product from circulation. However, the vending machine operator may be operating in a grey area, claiming the gummies were not intended for consumption but were of a collectible nature.
How to identify and respond?
If you come across a product resembling "Muscimol Duftgummy", it is crucial to immediately notify the authorities. Preventive measures are vital to avoid further poisoning cases.
This incident highlights the importance of exercising caution when purchasing unknown products, especially from unregulated sources. Parents should be particularly vigilant to protect their children from potentially lethal dangers.
