Stellantis faces historic production low in Italy's auto sector

The past year was challenging for the automotive industry, and among the biggest losers in Europe, the Stellantis group stands out clearly. It was especially tough in Italy, where the industry experienced a significant downturn.

Factory stoppages, thousands of unsold cars, and disappointed employees - that succinctly describes the previous year in the Italian automotive industry. The production of cars, a key pillar of the local economy, fell by 37% compared to 2023.

According to data published by FIM-CISL trade unions, the Stellantis group produced only 475,090 cars in Italy. It hasn't been this poor in the passenger car sector since 1956.

The declines affected the well-known Mirafiori factory in Turin, which in 2024 released 70% fewer cars than the previous year. The situation was even worse in Modena, where Maserati plants recorded a 79% drop. Both factories suffered from regular and mandatory stoppages due to a lack of demand.

The Italian industry is still holding on to some extent thanks to commercial vehicles, although their production also fell by 17% compared to 2023. Italy can only dream of achieving the production of around one million units per year that was promised a year and a half ago by the Italian government and Stellantis authorities. In 2024, the company failed to achieve even half of that target. There is hope that the coming months may improve somewhat.
