The team of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has submitted requests to withdraw federal charges against Donald Trump.
These concerns attempt to remain in power and retain classified documents. The prosecution cited a legal opinion from the Department of Justice stating that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted.
As the investigators explained, although they still believe in Trump's guilt, this prohibition is "categorical". It does not depend on the seriousness of the alleged crimes or the strength of the evidence.
- Today's decision by the Department of Justice ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law - commented Trump's team spokesperson, Steven Cheung.
Court cases involving Trump
The charges against Trump concerned two cases. He was accused of attempting to remain in power despite a lack of evidence of electoral fraud in Washington. He was accused of violating the Espionage Act by retaining national defence documents in Florida.
Despite the withdrawal of federal charges, Trump still faces charges in two state cases.
In New York, he was found guilty of crimes related to concealing payment for Stormy Daniels' silence, and in Georgia, he was accused of attempting to alter the election results.
