A team of Rolls-Royce scientists and engineers is developing a space microreactor programme. Rolls-Royce aims to develop technology capable of providing the energy necessary for human habitation and work on the Moon’s surface.

The company asserts that every space mission needs a reliable power source for communication systems, life support, and scientific research.

Nuclear solutions could significantly extend the duration and enhance the scientific value of future lunar missions.

The UK Space Agency has allocated £2.9 million for the new phase of the project. This funding is for the UK’s first nuclear reactor project, which has potential applications on the Moon.

This is a continuation of previous programmes worth £249,000 funded by the UK Space Agency in 2022.
