Rising stakes: Russia's tactical gains shift conflict dynamics in Ukraine
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warns that after many months on the defensive, the situation on the front is beginning to turn in favor of Russia. Analysts note that Vladimir Putin's army increasingly wins clashes with the Ukrainians. This is mainly due to one significant problem on the Ukrainian side.

ISW reports that Ukraine does indeed have air defense along the front, but it's too "scattered and inconsistent". Russia gladly exploits this through guided missiles, which in some sections of the front allow it to win "slowly, but surely".
"Russian attacks force Ukraine into a difficult choice. It's necessary to decide whether air defense systems should protect large concentrations of civilian population or soldiers behind the front line," writes ISW, indicating that Kyiv has too few anti-aircraft systems to protect the entire Ukrainian airspace from Russian missiles.
Especially since critical infrastructure facilities, which are also a frequent target of Russian attacks, require protection as well.
Meanwhile, Putin spoke on Thursday about Russian aggression against Ukraine. The dictator tried to explain the brutal attacks of Russia on energy facilities.
He stated in a propagandistic tone that attacks on elements of Ukraine's energy infrastructure are carried out as part of the "demilitarization" of the country because they are significant for the Ukrainian arms industry.
