Dishwashers have built-in cleaning programmes that we must remember to activate periodically. This ensures that the device operates more effectively. However, if a problem persists, you shouldn't immediately blame the dishwasher or the detergents or feel the need to call out a technician. It’s beneficial to check the propellers first.

Why doesn't the dishwasher clean the dishes?

The causes of dirty mugs, plates, and cutlery can vary, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that your dishwasher needs servicing or replacing. If you've already ruled out cleaning agents and technical issues, it might be that the dishwasher's inconspicuous yet extremely important propellers are the problem. These often get overlooked; we only remember them when our dishes block their movement. This oversight can be a significant mistake when using a dishwasher, but it can be quickly addressed.

Many dishwasher owners aren't unaware that they can easily remove and clean the propellers. A user manual arrives with every appliance, but few refer to it. It suggests regular cleaning of the propellers. Many manufacturers recommend cleaning these elements at least once a week. This regular maintenance can make an incredible difference and result in consistently clean and shiny dishes.

How to clean dishwasher propellers?

Not everyone appreciates just how crucial a component the dishwasher propellers are. It is through them that the water used to clean the dishes flows. If they're blocked with leftover food, it's unsurprising that the dishes aren't clean even after a lengthy wash cycle. Having removed the propeller, it's helpful to look inside and use long tweezers or a toothpick to remove any small particles.

Doing this assures you that the propellers will operate at an optimal speed in the dishwasher. If you have doubts whether these parts are genuinely clean and allow water to flow through them, place the propellers under the shower or wash them using your sink's faucet. Pouring water from the showerhead or tapping on it, you can check the water flow through all of their holes. After the successful examination, you can reinstall the propellers, reload your dishwasher, and start the machine.
