Missile strikes on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia claim lives amid rising tensions
At least four people lost their lives on Saturday morning during a missile attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
At the same time, Russian forces also launched an assault on Zaporizhzhia, located in the southeastern part of the country. The Russians employed ballistic missiles, and in Kyiv, an alarm was sounded only after the initial explosions had taken place.
"Four people were killed early on Saturday in the centre of Kyiv in a night-time Russian attack," reported Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv's city military administration.
The missile strikes destroyed, among other targets, the entrance to one of the underground stations and damaged the water supply system, leading to water cuts for some residents in central Kyiv. Fires ignited across the city; parked cars along the streets were also set ablaze.
In Zaporizhzhia, which was likewise struck by Russian missiles, six people sustained injuries.
Retaliation by Russia?
The attacks on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia occurred a few hours after drone strikes in Russia targeted fuel facilities. A Ukrainian drone assault led to a fire in the Kaluga region, south of Moscow, reported Reuters on Friday, citing local authorities. According to Russian media, an oil depot caught fire.
The region's governor, Vladislav Shapsha, wrote on Telegram that a fire had broken out at an industrial plant in the city of Lyudinovo, but according to preliminary information, no one was injured.
During the night, drones also targeted a fuel base in the Tula region.
