Extreme cold to hit across US as temperatures plummet
More than 120 million Americans are expected to face extreme cold, with temperatures potentially dropping as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists have warned that it will be colder than in Greenland.
Due to the severe weather, Monday's inauguration ceremony for Donald Trump, initially planned to be held outside, has been moved to the Capitol Rotunda. It is anticipated that the temperature will fall to minus four degrees, though the wind chill could make it feel like minus 13 degrees Celsius.
Extreme conditions across many states
According to the "Washington Post", approximately 30 states and nearly 50 million people could experience temperatures dropping below minus 23 degrees Celsius. The cold weather is expected to begin this weekend and persist through most of the following week. The polar system will also bring snow and icy roads to regions of the Midwest and Northeast America.
Residents in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan are threatened by a temperature drop to between minus 20 and minus 30 degrees Celsius. This could result in frostbite on exposed skin within 10-20 minutes. Areas from Illinois to Maine will endure temperatures ranging from minus 18 to minus 29 degrees Celsius.
Colder than in Greenland
Record low temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are possible in Pittsburgh, Morgantown, and Binghamton. On Monday, when accounting for the wind chill, temperatures may feel like minus 40 degrees Celsius in North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Next week, temperatures in the USA are expected to be colder than those in Nuuk, Greenland.
