The Madison Police Chief, Shon Barnes, and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway declined to disclose the identities of the shooting victims during a press conference. Rhodes-Conway appealed to journalists: "Just have some human decency. Leave them alone. Let them grieve. Let them recover. Let them heal."

Barnes informed the public that Rupnow's parents are cooperating with investigators. He noted on CNN, "We also want to look at if the parents may have been negligent. And that’s a question that we’ll have to answer with our district attorney’s office. But at this time, that does not appear to be the case."

Rupnow most likely shot herself fatally. Officers found her deceased with a gun. Two students sustained life-threatening injuries. A teacher alerted the police about the attack.

Dramatic statistics

The "Washington Post" points out that since the Columbine High massacre in 1999, there have been over 400 school shootings. In nine cases, the shooters were female students.
