Growing orchids isn't for the faint-hearted. Despite their beauty, these plants are very sensitive. When properly cared for, they reward us with exquisite flowers that are hard to look away from. Some windowsills boast a whole array of colours, showcasing various shapes and sizes of blooms.
Orchids can grace homes for many years, but sometimes, they begin to wither before our eyes. In such cases, it's crucial to ensure that all aspects of care adhere to guidelines. Orchids thrive in a warm and humid climate, which becomes problematic during the winter period. The plants can suffer from excessively dry air when the heating season begins. On the other hand, ventilating the room might harm the flowers.
Orchids are fading. Here's how you can help them
Occasionally, around late December or early January, orchids start to wither, their leaves become limp, and the roots slightly soften. This might indicate that the orchid is... hungry. When the leaves start to turn yellow, it's the last moment to intervene. How can you help your plant?
At home, we can prepare two exceptionally simple fertilisers for orchids that will make them grow beautifully and even start developing new buds.
Homemade fertiliser for orchids? It's simple
Mix half a cup of water, a teaspoon of honey, sugar, and some lemon juice in a jar. Apply this syrup to the leaves, which will quickly become beautiful again. The strengthened plant will begin to sprout new buds. It's also beneficial to add lemon juice to the water used for watering the orchids occasionally. This will acidify the soil and strengthen the plant.
An infusion of red onion can be prepared to further nourish the orchid. To do this, take the peels of two red onions and pour boiling water over them. After straining, you can water the plant the next day with this infusion. Just a few drops in the watering can will suffice. Do this once a week. The first effects should be visible after two weeks.
