Israel intensifies strikes in Syria to counter new threats
The Israeli army has reported conducting air raids on military facilities in southern Syria. Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasised that these actions aim to prevent these areas from being taken over by the new Syrian government or terrorist organisations.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in London, reported that Israeli planes carried out four strikes on a military unit command southwest of Damascus and a separate attack on a military facility in southern Daraa. There are currently no reports of casualties or damage.
The office of Minister Katz announced that the Israeli air force is conducting intensive raids as part of the new "pacification of southern Syria" policy. The statement emphasised that they will not allow southern Syria to mirror the situation in south Lebanon.
Threat to Israeli citizens
In a statement by the Israeli army, it was noted that the raids targeted, among other things, weapon stockpiles, which posed a threat to Israeli citizens. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel insisted that no troops from the new government be stationed in areas south of Damascus.
In December 2024, a coalition of rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime, leading to an escalation in Israeli military actions. The Israeli Air Force regularly targets military sites in Syria, and the raids intensified during the conflict that led to Assad's downfall. Since 2011, various armed groups have controlled Syrian territory, and the new government has announced the creation of a single national army.
