Italy's Tajani calls for UN mandate before EU troops in Ukraine
The Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, Antonio Tajani, has expressed scepticism about the idea of deploying European soldiers to Ukraine without a UN mandate. He emphasised that a neutral zone should be managed by impartial countries.
Antonio Tajani, who also serves as Italy's Minister of Foreign Affairs, shared his reservations about sending European soldiers to Ukraine during an interview with Canale 5. He emphasised that such actions would not be the most suitable solution.
If we need to create a buffer zone, it is necessary to send troops under the flag of the United Nations, and in such a case Italy could be available, as is the case for Palestine, but always with everyone's co-responsibility, stated Tajani.
Tajani mentioned that neutral countries should manage the neutral zone between Russia and Ukraine. Italian soldiers could participate in such a mission only with a UN mandate, which would need the approval of the Security Council, including China and Russia. The Deputy Prime Minister compared this to the presence of the Italian contingent in Lebanon.
The Italian politician stressed the importance of the European Union's involvement in discussions with Russia, the USA, and Ukraine, particularly regarding the sanctions imposed on Moscow.
There is no peace without the Europeans. Let us use the leverage of sanctions, stated Tajani, adding that he shares this view with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Spending on armaments and Europe's security
Tajani argued that Italian spending on armaments must increase to at least 2% of GDP, highlighting that the USA will not abandon Europe's defence. The Biden administration expects greater European involvement in defence, which the Italian politician viewed as appropriate.
When asked about the potential threat from Russia, Tajani said Europe must ensure its security. He added that Ukraine will be protected because it is part of the European Union. The Deputy Prime Minister asserted that Americans cannot neglect this part of the world.
In his speech, Antonio Tajani underscored the importance of international cooperation and the UN's role in ensuring peace in Ukraine. His comments indicate the need for a balanced approach to security in Europe.
