Decoy or destruction? The reality behind Russia's claims on Ukraine's Patriot Systems

Russian media have released a propaganda film claiming they destroyed a Patriot missile defence system - the target of the Iskander missile attack was allegedly the M902 launcher and the AN/MPQ-65 radar. However, there are strong indications that the Russians were duped and destroyed a decoy of the American system.

Missile defence systems protect significant civilian and military sites from aerial attacks. They play a vital role in maintaining strategic advantage and ensuring national security. Their capability to identify, follow, and eliminate incoming missiles or enemy aircraft reduces the impact of bombings and enhances the effectiveness of the territorial defence.

In 2023, American Patriot missile defence systems were delivered to Ukraine. These systems have proven effective in repelling missile strikes and countering Russian aviation, so, understandably, they have become prime targets for the Russian Federation.

Russians claim to have destroyed the Patriot System

Recently, the Russians boasted in propaganda material that they had destroyed the Patriot system near Huliaipole in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast – the Iskander-M ballistic missile was meant to have hit the M902 launcher and the AN/MPQ-65 radar.

According to analysts, the Russians did make a precise hit with an Iskander missile, valued at around £2.5 million, but on a decoy of the anti-aircraft system.

Experts noted the absence of the usual antenna on the M902/903 launchers and the AN/MPQ-65 radar's incorrect positioning. Crucially, there were no visible secondary explosions from launcher missiles after the attack.

The equipment supplied to Ukraine utilises PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles. These are mainly designed to shoot down aircraft and ballistic warheads and to neutralize manoeuvring missiles and tactical rockets. The AN/MPQ-65 radar, with its 240-degree field of vision, is also crucial.

However, it should be acknowledged that the Russians have had some success in this arena.
