Concern grows for Pope Francis amid hospitalisation with pneumonia
Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the Vicar General of Rome, has asked the faithful to pray for Pope Francis, who has been at the Gemelli Polyclinic for six days and has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.
In a statement, Cardinal Reina emphasised that he is following the reports on the Pope's health with care and trust. He asked the faithful, parochial, and religious communities in Rome to pray so that God may give Francis the strength to overcome this difficult time.
The Vicar for the Diocese of Rome expressed that, as a united family, they are praying that the Lord God will give their bishop the strength to endure this challenging time.
The Pope's health condition
88-year-old Pope Francis has been in the hospital for six days.
The Vatican's statement on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. GMT raised concern. It informed that the 88-year-old Pope's clinical condition, which is being treated at the Gemelli Polyclinic, is "complex." The statement indicated a "polymicrobial infection" resulting from bronchiectasis and asthmatic inflammation, requiring cortisone antibiotic therapy.
"A follow-up chest CT scan, to which the Holy Father was subjected this afternoon—prescribed by the Vatican medical team and the medical staff of the "A. Gemelli" Polyclinic Foundation—revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional pharmacological therapy," announced the Vatican.
