Android automotive gears up for Netflix and youtube in 2025
February 2025 marks a significant milestone in Android Automotive's and Android Auto's evolution. Google's system, which is integrated into modern vehicles, will soon support applications that were once only adapted for devices like tablets.
For those using Android Automotive, this means a substantial increase in available applications, including the possibility of accessing apps like YouTube and Netflix. Google announced this change in 2024, and as Android Authority reminds us, the relevant update is scheduled to take effect in February 2025.
From that point onwards, all applications "optimised for large screens" (most programs for Chromebooks and tablets) will also be accessible in cars. Eventually, the same development approach will apply to Android Auto, although a specific date for this is not yet available.
Google's aim is that developers should not need to invest time in creating extra versions of their apps for cars. Applications already adapted for larger displays should automatically fit car screens with no input from developers or with only minimal adjustments required.
As reported in 2024 during the I/O conference, this development is expected to lead to the much-anticipated availability of a variety of entertainment apps on Android Auto (and earlier on Android Automotive). These apps could be useful during stops, offering features such as streaming films via platforms like Netflix or YouTube. Currently, Android Auto only offers Game Snacks in this category, which are rather simple and primarily serve as a novelty rather than genuine entertainment whilst parked.
