Vulgar graffiti on Slovakia's victory monument sparks outrage

A vulgar inscription directed at Vladimir Putin has appeared on the Victory Monument in Dargov, Slovakia. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Matúš Šutaj Eštok, expressed his outrage over the graffiti. "This is a provocation against our history," he wrote on social media.

"This act is not just ordinary vandalism; it's a direct provocation aimed at our history, our heroes, and the values on which independent Slovakia was built," Šutaj Eštok wrote on Facebook. The minister added that a Nazi swastika also appeared on the monument.

A photo published by "Denník N" shows that on another side of the monument, a symbol equating the communist sickle and hammer with the swastika was painted.

"Liberals, progressives, and their non-governmental organisations are gradually trying to rewrite history, weaken national identity, and undermine those who fought against fascism. The reasons for these attacks should be sought in a long-term attempt to change public perception so that the actions of people who fought for our freedom and built Slovak independence become insignificant. Under the pretext of promoting the only 'correct' view, they twist history and impose their version of the past," the concerned minister wrote.

Šutaj Eštok emphasised that the Hlas party values history and will not allow "it to be maligned by those who, in the name of progressivism and liberalism, destroy everything that makes Slovakia Slovakia." The police are actively investigating the issue. The minister hoped that the perpetrators would be quickly found and punished according to the law.

As reported by Lenka Ivanová, spokeswoman for the National Police Headquarters in Košice, the police are searching for the perpetrator or perpetrators who, at an unspecified time, damaged the base of the monument by applying vulgar inscriptions.
