The United States carried out these targeted airstrikes overnight from Wednesday to Thursday Greenwich Mean Time on subterranean weapons facilities located in regions of Yemen controlled by pro-Iranian Houthi rebels, according to US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin.
American forces struck several underground Houthi structures that contained various types of armaments used by the rebels to launch attacks on civilian merchant ships and warships across the region, as per the Pentagon statement. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on the social media platform X that an assessment of the attacks' impact is underway, with no evidence indicating any civilian casualties.
The West fights Houthi forces
Reuters recalls that since November of the previous year, Houthi militants, in a show of solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing year-long Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, have launched nearly 100 attacks from Yemeni territory on ships traversing the Red Sea. They have sunk two vessels, resulting in the deaths of at least four sailors.
US forces also targeted Houthi-controlled facilities at the beginning of October, destroying 15 targets on that occasion.
