The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which took place on 6 May 2023, was the largest event in the United Kingdom in 70 years. It was attended by 100 state leaders and watched by millions of television viewers worldwide.
According to a British government report, the total cost of the ceremony was £72 million.
A modest ceremony
The Ministry of Culture, responsible for organising the coronation, reported that £50.3 million was allocated for the ceremony itself, and an additional £21.7 million was spent on police security. In comparison to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022, which cost £162 million, the coronation was significantly more modest.
This decision to reduce costs aimed to reflect modern times and consider the financial difficulties facing the nation.
The coronation attracted huge media interest worldwide. According to the Ministry of Culture, more than 100,000 articles were written about the event, and the broadcast was watched by 2 billion people in 125 countries.
A British government report emphasises that despite its modest nature, the coronation was an event of enormous international significance.
