Videos and images of the AHS Krab in action have surfaced online, showcasing how Ukrainian forces adapt the weapon for front-line use. This includes footage showing the installation of anti-drone cages and instances where these cages have protected the Krabs from being destroyed.
Recently, the Ukrainian army released a video demonstrating the workings of the Krab. Lasting just under a minute, the video reveals the ammunition loading and firing process, highlighting the spacious interior of the howitzer. This spaciousness allows the crew to stand fully upright and comfortably prepare ammunition for firing.
Ukrainian forces have previously highlighted the Krab's mobility, ease of operation, and powerful engine that generates 1,000 hp. This makes the howitzer highly maneuverable in various conditions, including winter. Such capabilities have led Ukrainians to claim that the Krabs have "changed the situation on the front".
The Polish AHS Krab howitzer
Designed and produced in Poland since 2008, this self-propelled howitzer with tracked traction matches or exceeds the offensive capabilities of some of the world's top artillery machines, including the German PzH 2000. Ukrainians assert that the Krab outperforms its German counterpart in combat situations. The Krab's 52-caliber 155 mm barrel enables it to fire projectiles up to 24.85 miles using special ammunition with a gas generator.
The Krab's firing rate is also noteworthy. During burst mode, it can deliver three shots in 10 seconds. In its standard firing mode, it maintains a rate of 2 shots per minute, which can increase threefold to 6 shots per minute in intense mode. The engine, a particular highlight among Ukrainian operators, propels the howitzer to speeds of up to 37.28 mph on roads and up to 18.64 mph across rough terrain.
