Ukraine's right to exist: Sybiha challenges Putin's denial
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, highlighted the denial by Putin of Ukraine's right to exist as the main cause of the war. This statement was in response to the US Secretary of State's appeal urging the UN to adopt the American version of the resolution on Ukraine.
"The root causes of this war are Putin's denial of Ukraine's right to exist and his wish to destroy our nation—a genocidal goal backed by Russians. This is why Russia started this war, commits atrocities, and tries to change borders by force. So yes, let’s remove the root causes," wrote the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, in his statement.
Sybiha responded in this manner to the appeal from the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who implored UN countries to adopt the American version of the resolution concerning Ukraine.
Rubio called on UN countries to adopt the US resolution on Ukraine
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, called upon UN member states to adopt a "simple and historic" resolution on Ukraine, proposed by Washington. This draft, prepared on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, is set to compete with the text proposed by Ukraine and its European allies.
The US resolution calls for a prompt end to the conflict and the establishment of lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia. Russia proposed an amendment to include the "elimination of root causes" of the conflict.
The Russian authorities described the US resolution draft as a "positive step" and announced that if their amendment is accepted by the General Assembly, Moscow will vote in favour of the resolution.
