For several days, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been conducting a surprising military operation on Russian territory, gaining an advantage in the Kursk region. These actions are coordinated precisely, and Ukrainian soldiers, supported by modern equipment, are capturing more territories.
British Challenger 2 tanks play a key role in this area - some of the best in NATO.
As General Bogusław Pacek told "Fakt," the British decision to donate tanks is important for two reasons. Ukrainians need those tanks desperately, and secondly, it sends a significant signal to Russia.
This information is good not only from a military point of view, but it also has significant symbolic meaning because image-wise, Russians react strongly to the mere fact that Western tanks are appearing. Although no country has attacked Russia since World War II, and although in the opinion of Russian authorities they would never dare to confront Moscow, they are now sending weapons and equipment bravely and without any doubts, according to "Fakt".
As the general adds, to be completely satisfied, the Ukrainians need one more thing: the ability to use Storm Shadow missiles. Although the British have given the green light, the United States consistently disagrees.
Russia can only dream. British tanks in Ukraine
Ukrainians are extremely pleased with these tanks. The Challenger 2 features Chobham/Dorchester multilayer armour that was positively verified during the Gulf War. Additional reactive armour sets can be mounted on it.
At the time of entering service in 1994, it was considered the safest tank in the world. Even today, it is exceptionally good in this regard, much better than most tanks used by the Russians.
The British tank also has an NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) protection system and a semiconductor electric drive for turret and gun movement. This has almost eliminated the risk of crew burns, which could occur in the event of damage to a traditional hydraulic system.
In February, it was reported that 14 Challenger 2 tanks had been delivered to Ukraine. The Russians managed to destroy one of them. It was the first documented elimination of a British tank in armed conflict by an enemy army.
