The Pope’s comments during an interview with Swiss radio and television ignited a flurry of reactions. Francis mentioned: "The stronger one is the one who understands the situation, considers the nation and has the courage of the white flag to negotiate. Today, negotiations can be facilitated by international powers. The term 'negotiate' symbolizes bravery" - PAP reported.

Controversial "white flag"
The usage of the "white flag," traditionally seen as a gesture of surrender, caused the greatest uproar. "When you realise you are defeated, and things are turning sour, it takes bravery to negotiate. You feel ashamed, but consider how many lives it will save?" - said Francis, stressing that "negotiations do not equate to capitulation". The head of the Vatican’s press office, Matteo Bruni, clarified that the Pope seeks “to establish a foundation for diplomatic resolution aiming for a fair and enduring peace”.
Ukrainian diplomat's response: Did anyone negotiate with Hitler?
Andrij Jurasz, the Ukrainian ambassador to the Vatican, reacted to the church leader's statements. "Being consistent is crucial. Considering the current global conflict, it's vital to draw lessons from the previous one," - the diplomat expressed on the social media platform X.
"Was there ever a serious discussion about engaging in peace talks with Hitler using the white flag to appease him?" - he inquired. According to the Ukrainian ambassador, the only way forward is to win the war. "Therefore, the lesson is: if we wish to end the war, we must do everything within our power to defeat the dragon," - Jurasz stated.
