Ukraine and USA near mineral extraction pact
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, may sign an agreement with the USA today regarding mineral extraction, the Institute for the Study of War reports.
This groundbreaking decision might be made today. The visit of a representative from Donald Trump's administration, who recently completed their visit to Kyiv, has influenced this potential agreement.
According to the Institute for the Study of War's analysis, Keith Kellogg, who was in Kyiv, was tasked with easing tensions between Washington and Zelensky. The President of Ukraine mentioned an agreement between American and Ukrainian teams working towards an end to the war in his address.
Zelensky emphasized that the agreement could significantly enhance relations between the countries and that the details need to be refined to ensure they are effective. On Friday, the President of Ukraine spoke with President Andrzej Duda, who is travelling to Washington today for a meeting with Donald Trump.
According to the "Daily Telegraph," the original draft of the agreement proposed that Ukraine would receive 50% of the profits from the exploitation of rare earth metals. Zelensky refused to sign this document, as it did not include future security guarantees.
The Americans proposed a new version of the agreement, which is currently being considered by the Ukrainian side. Details of the new proposal have not yet been disclosed.
