The U.S. administration has announced sanctions on Russian and Iranian groups for election interference in 2024 and attempts to incite conflicts. The sanctions target the Geopolitical Expertise Centre linked to the Russian GRU and Iran's Cognitive Design Production Centre.
Russia and Iran allegedly spread disinformation
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the Geopolitical Expertise Centre, founded by Alexander Dugin, generated disinformation content using artificial intelligence—these efforts aimed to disseminate false information swiftly through a network of websites.
The Iranian centre's actions aimed to incite conflicts among American voters.
In a separate move, President Joe Biden's administration also sanctioned Russian judge Olesya Mendeleeva. This action was in response to her sentencing Moscow councillor and human rights defender Alexei Gorinov to seven years in prison for a statement opposing the invasion of Ukraine. Gorinov was one of the first opponents of the war to receive such a sentence.
