On Monday evening, 16th December, police were called to a flat on Galveston Street SW in Washington. At the scene, they found a critically injured five-year-old who had been shot in the abdomen by her three-year-old brother. The girl was immediately taken to hospital, where doctors are fighting to save her life.
The accident occurred while the children were under the supervision of an adult, who became preoccupied with other matters and left the gun unsecured on the table.
The three-year-old began playing with the weapon, and when his sister approached, he pulled the trigger. The shot struck the girl in the abdomen.
The children's guardian detained
In connection with the incident, the children's guardian was detained and charged with cruelty towards children. Additionally, a woman suspected of assaulting police officers was arrested. According to the police, the detainee is the sister of the children involved in the shooting.
