The family from Hallein, Austria, was enjoying time at the popular recreational facility, Watzmann-Therme, and was preparing to leave when, at approximately 2:20 PM GMT, the parents realised that their three-year-old son was missing. A frantic search ensued, during which it was discovered that the boy had wandered off and made his way back to a part of the complex where the recreational pool is located.
According to police reports, the boy, unseen by his guardians, returned to the first floor of the complex where the pool is situated and, for unknown reasons, fell into the water.
It is believed that he remained below the surface for several minutes before being seen by people nearby.
Quick response from witnesses and rescue operation
It was two 12-year-old girls who initially noticed the child's motionless body in the water. The teenagers swiftly pulled the boy from the pool and attempted to alert adults. During this time, a doctor who happened to be on site found the child and immediately began resuscitation. Police officers and a medical rescue team quickly joined the effort.
Due to the boy's critical condition, it was decided that he should be airlifted to a hospital in Salzburg. A rescue helicopter was summoned, and the landing area was illuminated with assistance from the fire brigade. As reported by local services, the condition of the child is very serious.

The boy's family received psychological support from a specialised crisis intervention team.
