Tensions flare as Nziv report inflames Egypt-Israel relations
The Israeli portal Nziv caused a stir by describing a hypothetical attack on the Aswan High Dam in Egypt. This led to a sharp and firm response from Egyptian politicians, who began discussing a potential attack on Tel Aviv.
The Israeli portal Nziv, known for its military analyses, published a report that heightened tensions between Egypt and Israel. The article described a hypothetical war scenario in which Israel might attack the Aswan High Dam, which is one of the two dams on the Nile, located near the city of Aswan in Egypt.
The Aswan High Dam, constructed in 1971 with the assistance of the Soviet Union, is a crucial part of Egypt's infrastructure. It regulates the flow of the Nile, prevents floods, and generates 10 billion KWh of energy annually.
According to the Polish Press Agency, Egyptian politicians reacted with outrage to the publication. Mostafa Bakry, an Egyptian MP, warned that in the event of a military conflict, the Egyptian armed forces could rapidly reach Tel Aviv. A similar stance was taken by Saada al-Figi, a former undersecretary of one of the ministries, who threatened to destroy the Israeli nuclear reactor if Egypt were threatened.
Although the scenario presented by Nziv was purely theoretical, some Egyptian politicians perceived it as a genuine threat. However, not everyone took the matter seriously. Major General Osama Mahmud Kbeir remarked that the portal's speculations were absurd and should not be taken seriously.
Tension between Israel and Egypt
Relations between Egypt and Israel are currently strained, further exacerbated by the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Egypt condemned Israeli actions in this territory and rejected US requests to accommodate displaced residents of Gaza in the Sinai.
The publication by the Nziv portal, although theoretical, caused real tensions, highlighting how delicate the relations between these two countries are in a region where any spark can ignite broader conflicts.
