Swedish tanks: A golden edge in Ukraine's defence strategy
The Swedish Stridsvagn 122 tanks, equipped with advanced Barracuda IR camouflage, are considered to be the finest armoured vehicles in the Ukrainian arsenal. We explore their capabilities and delve into the reasons behind their effectiveness.
Swedish Stridsvagn 122 tanks, an upgraded version of the German Leopard 2A5, are regarded as top-tier machines in Ukraine. These vehicles, featuring Barracuda IR camouflage, greatly enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian armoured forces.
"Swedish gold" on the frontlines
The Stridsvagn 122, affectionately known as "Swedish Gold," is undoubtedly one of the most advanced tanks employed by the defending army. Based on the German Leopard 2A5, it incorporates more advanced fire control systems and the TCCS command system, which enhances its operational capabilities. With a reinforced hull and durable fuel tanks, the Stridsvagn 122 is built to withstand challenging combat conditions.
Defence analyst Jarosław Wolski has pointed out that these are "the best and most well-armoured tanks Ukraine has." Sweden has supplied 10 of these tanks to the defending army, thereby significantly boosting its defensive capability. The primary armament of the Stridsvagn 122 is a 120 mm smoothbore gun, complemented by two 7.62 mm machine guns and an 80 mm smoke grenade launcher. The tank also features an advanced fire suppression system and monitoring technologies, which significantly enhance its survivability on the battlefield.
Capabilities of Ukraine's armoured gem
These tanks were originally designed with the Swedish army in mind, with production taking place both in Germany and under licence in Sweden. The Stridsvagn 122 retains many features of the German prototype but incorporates modern technologies that improve protection and accuracy. Its engine, boasting 1500 horsepower, enables the Stridsvagn 122 to reach speeds of up to 43 mph, with a range of about 292 miles on roads and 93 miles off-road.
The Barracuda IR camouflage fitted on these tanks reduces their thermal and radar signature, making them difficult for the enemy to detect. According to the manufacturer, Saab, the camouflage can reduce detectability by up to 90%, thereby increasing the crew's chances of survival.
The arrival of the Stridsvagn 122 in Ukraine marks an important step in boosting its defensive capabilities. Modern technologies and advanced camouflage render these tanks a vital component of the Ukrainian armed forces' arsenal. The Ukrainians are highly satisfied with the Stridsvagn 122 tanks delivered by Sweden, which they consider to be among the best for combatting the Russian army.
