Swedish CV90s bolster Ukrainian defenses in new drills
A video has surfaced on social media showcasing the exercises of the Ukrainian army's 21st Mechanized Brigade. These exercises involved the use of Swedish CV90 (Stridsfordon 90) infantry fighting vehicles, which Ukrainian soldiers have praised highly.
The footage, depicting a brief segment of the 21st Mechanized Brigade's exercises, was published on X by the official account of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.
CV90 in Ukraine
The Defence Express portal reports that during these exercises, the Ukrainians are "actively enhancing their combat capabilities by employing advanced CV90 infantry fighting vehicles provided by Sweden." The training primarily concentrated on advancing skills in rapid deployment and targeting to ensure the CV90 crews are prepared for effective action in various combat scenarios, including high-intensity confrontations.
In discussions with media representatives, Ukrainian soldiers using the CV90 vehicles noted that these are the most modern vehicles they have received as part of support from Western allies. They excel in mobility, firepower, and crew safety.
Military gold from Sweden in Ukraine
The CV90 weighs approximately 20,000 kg and 38,000 kg, depending on the equipment. Heavier versions of the Strf 9040C, noted for their additional armour and enhanced optics, have been seen in Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers also have access to the specialised Barracuda camouflage, which reduces the vehicle's thermal signature. This makes it much more challenging for enemy observation systems to detect.
The CV90s sent to Ukraine boast significant offensive capabilities, chiefly provided by a turret equipped with a Bofors 40 mm cannon capable of firing several types of ammunition. These Swedish vehicles are propelled by Scania engines, enabling them to achieve speeds of up to 70 km/h on roads and about 45 km/h off-road.
The Ukrainians have been eager to acquire as many of these Swedish vehicles as possible. Their efforts have been successful; last year, an agreement was declared between Stockholm and Kyiv, which will lead to additional CV90s being dispatched to Ukraine. Some of these are expected to be the latest CV9035 MkIIIC models equipped with 35 mm Bushmaster III cannons.
