Southwest China landslide: Rescue teams race to find missing

According to Chinese state media, at least 30 people are missing in southwest China, where a landslide has occurred. Several houses have been buried. The rescue operation is ongoing, and so far, the services have evacuated approximately 200 people from the endangered area.

The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched hundreds of rescuers, including firefighters, to a village in Junlian County, located in the southern part of the country.

As a result of the landslide, 10 houses have been buried, and about 30 people are considered missing.

According to state media, two people have been rescued, and around 200 have been evacuated from the endangered area.

The BBC reported that a command centre has been established at the scene of the incident to coordinate the services' actions. The rescue operation continues.

One of the residents told "Beijing News" that in the past six months, falling rocks have been frequently observed from the mountain. Geologists conducted an inspection of the area at the end of last year.

President Xi Jinping expressed concern about the situation and urged authorities to exert every effort to locate the missing people.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has ordered an investigation and inspection of potential geological threats in nearby regions. According to the Xinhua agency, Premier Li also emphasised the necessity of evacuating residents from the danger zone to prevent further disasters.

According to Sky News, landslides in China are common, particularly in mountainous regions, where heavy rainfall can cause ground destabilisation.
