A washing machine is one of the most frequently used appliances in the home, requiring regular cleaning. Otherwise, an unpleasant odour can start to emanate from its interior. How can you deal with this? Discover a simple method below.

Unpleasant odours from the washing machine are a common problem in many homes. The most common cause is mould, which develops in hard-to-reach places such as the seal, detergent drawer or filter. If you notice black spots on any part of the washing machine or detect a musty smell coming from the drum, do not delay in taking action.

How can you get rid of mould from the washing machine? You don’t need any specialised agents or strong detergents for this. Use products that you already have at home.

Put into the drawer and set the wash. You will get rid of the unpleasant odour

Baking soda is a versatile product. We use it for cooking, washing, and cleaning. It has bleaching, disinfecting, and antifungal properties. You can buy it in any shop and won't spend more than 50 pence.

How can you use baking soda to clean the washing machine? It's very simple. Start by emptying the drum. Open the detergent drawer and put in 1/2 cup of baking soda. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the compartment for fabric softener to enhance its effect. Close the drawer and set the wash to the highest possible temperature. After the wash is finished, open the door so the drum can dry completely. Repeat the procedure once a month, and the unpleasant odour will be just a memory.

Put into the washing machine. After the cycle, it will be like new

Baking soda and vinegar can both be replaced with citric acid, which will remove not only unpleasant residue but also limescale. In the case of persistent mould, you should use stronger agents like a dishwasher tablet and tea tree oil. The tablets are based on baking soda, citric acid, and strong chemical substances, while tea tree oil has antifungal and antiseptic properties.

How can you remove mould from the washing machine? Put two tablets into the empty drum. Open the detergent drawer and pour in 30 drops of tea tree oil, then set the programme to a minimum of 140°F. There will be no trace of the residue, and a pleasant scent will emanate from the interior.
